We have been making a lot of pizza lately. It is so much easier and less expensive than I thought. It tastes so much better if you make your own sauce and use fresh toppings. This pizza recipe is similar to what I make.

I like this print because

I chose a French paper for several reasons but one is because I minored in French in college, and I wanted to represent that in this, one of my last prints of my undergraduate career

I went to the famous Georgetown Cupcake the other day. It's right around the corner from where I work. But unfortunately (or fortunately) it's not much of a temptation for me.

It was disappointing.

They are lovely little cupcakes, and they don't taste so bad either. But at three bucks a pop, I lose a little self respect.

I am a baker! Every time I see someone walking down the street carrying one of those cute pink boxes from Georgetown Cupcake (which you also have to pay for, by the way), I can't help but think, "what a sucker". Needless to say I rushed right home and made my own.

Cinnamon cupcakes. A nice flavor for fall. They may not be so pretty or quite so good (I take that back, they were that good) but they are all mine.

Grilled Pineapple Dessert

The recipe:

1-2 whole pineapples

Cut fresh pineapple into long spears for ease in grilling. Set aside on a platter.

Then make a little sauce for grilling:

6 tablespoons Butter

2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar

a good amount of nutmeg

In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter then add the sugar and stir until it dissolves. Add nutmeg. When it's nice and smooth, pour the mixture over the fruit so it's nicely coated.

Grill the pineapple for about 10, maybe 15 minutes, turning it over a couple of times. Pineapple should be just a little golden.

While that's grilling make the carmel sauce:

1/2 cup Butter

1 cup firmly packed Brown Sugar

1/2 cup Heavy Cream

pinch of salt

a little vanilla

Just use the same saucepan. Over medium heat, melt the butter, then add the sugar and cream. Whisk continuously and bring it almost to a boil, but be really careful not to make it too hot or the butter and sugar will separate and not taste too good. When it's nice and smooth, remove from heat and add salt and vanilla. (The sauce can be made ahead of time and refrigerated, and reheated on the stove over low heat. )

When the pineapple is done arrange on a platter and pour carmel sauce over it.

It's even better if you sprinkle orange zest on it, or you can serve the warm fruit over vanilla ice cream. You could grill bananas along with the pineapple if you want, but that doesn't sound very good to me. After grilling but before the carmel sauce, the pineapple is really good to add to your grilled burger or grilled teriyaki chicken. It's a really generous amount of sauce for one pineapple. I think 1 and 1/2 pineapples should serve 6-8 people.

The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho invited the advanced printmakers from BYU-Idaho to have a little print show again.

I submitted three. (This one, this one, and that one.)

Our print show, and the Idaho Paints Idaho exhibit will be up in the museum until the beginning of August. Worth it.

Why? I have my reasons: a). Why not? b). The amount of quality works I've been producing in traditional mediums has more than somewhat depleted. c). I meant to glaze this red. Pete's Red is such a nice candy apple red. But instead of red they turned quite purple, which is one of my least favorite colors.

But oh how I love sweet purple plums. I pick them ripe from the tree in the back yard (actually the neighbors back yard) on a warm summer day. They are the loveliest shade of deep red with dusty highlights of purple and blue. They are delicious. So sweet and so juicy.

This is the house my mother's family lived in before emigrating to Amercia. It is in Norway on an isalnd in the Oslo fjord called Tjome. The house is named Kjynna. This print is all aquatint.

I painted this when I was in the 4th grade. I was nine years old. Oliver Parson (Del and Leon's dad) lived in my ward for a few years and my mom arranged for him to give me art lessons. I would go over to his house and he and I would sit in his garage and paint. He was a quiet teacher. He would have something set up for me to paint when I got there, a still life or a picture ripped out of a magazine, he would give me his brushes and paint and just let let me go. If I needed help he just sort of pointed to the problems. That remains my favorite art class.

This is what I do to help me think of what project to do next: I sit down with a ball of clay, I imagine a position my body could take, and I sketch it out of clay. When I finished one pose I put the clay back into a ball and think of another pose. I sculpt these rough figures to help me think.

These ceramic dishes are made with two kinds of clay, terra cotta and white stoneware. For the first I attatched seperate squares. For the bowl I wedged the two colors together to create the marbeled look.

Subject Matter

When an amateur poet

New Poetry

What do you write
when there's nothing to write about?
When you want to write
but you have no ideas,
no creative juices are flowing,
no topic you'd even want to think about
much less write on?
So why is it
I still want to write?
What motivation is there
besides a compelling topic
that carries me through
the lines of a poem,
that sends my mind exploring
through the alleys, and valleys, and veins,
through the deepest corners of a thought
with only a drop of inspiration,
until, flowing through my limbs
to the ends of my finger tips,
results in poetry?
How is it that I now write

High School Ceramics

This is my first mosaic. I wish the elephant stood out better. I cut every piece before firing, and hand painted each before glaze firing. My teacher had me load the glazed tiles in the kiln. I don't blame her for not wanting to load them herself. I had very few left over tiles because I mapped out my drawing and knew how many tiles fit on the board, and I was able to get a very close guess to how many tiles I needed of each color. I bought a pine board, mixed the morter, lay the tiles, put grout between the tiles, then scrubbed it all clean. Both the mosaics are at least 2 by 3 feet. A lady offered to buy it at an art show, she wanted to put it in her childrens nursery, but after all those hours I worked on it after school, money just wasn't enough.

This is a mosaic replica of Starry Night that I made with a couple of other students. The first mosaic I made took me so long that I knew there was no way I could have finished this alone by the end of the school year. This second mosaic was much easier with the extra help and with my experience. I made slab plates that were fired and glazed, each plate in a different color. Then I took them outside and dropped them on the cement and hammered them into little pieces. All the peices were randomly broken except the moon and the steeple, and the black border. My teacher kept this project so I guess maybe it is on display in my high school somewhere.

This is an african inspired lion mask. I rubbed on acrylic paint with a towel to give it a rustic look. I punched small holes in the clay all around the face so I could tie rafia onto it for a mane.
